The newspaper that first printed the De Bataviase Nouvelles published in Batavia in 1744, then De Locomotief published in 1852 in Semarang and Bataviassch Niewsblaad published in Batavia in 1885. In 1776, after the ban on newspaper publishing Nouvelles De Bataviase on November 20, 1745, the colonial government gave permission to the L Dominicus an expert in the printing press to publish weekly, named Het Vendu-Nieuws (News Auction). It contains news weekly auction companies trading under the VOC. Meanwhile, outside advertising companies charged VOC. This weekly published between in 1776 lasted until 1809. (Riyanto ,2000:52-53)

In the 19th century, published several Indonesian newspapers (Malay) of which ‘The news letter of Language Melajoe’ which was published in Surabaya in 1861. Then ‘Star Timoer two weekly newspapers that contain various socio-economic news. Later in Semarang in 1860 published bugle Melajoe of Semarang. In 1883 Chinese entrepreneurs began to engage the business of printing and books, particularly the publication of translations of classical Chinese literature which later developed into a widespread commodity printing.
